Methodology
It is assumed that the total plastic waste going to dumpsites is partially attributed to formal collection from municipal councils and self-hauling to dumpsites.
The amount of waste coming from formal collection to dumpsites is calculated by subtracting the quantity of waste collected by the plastic waste landfilled.
Limitations
Plastic waste sent to dumpsites can be dificult to collect data and measure, especially as the public can dump waste discretely.
The data only looks at more larger dumpsites, but it is likely that waste from rural communities goes directly to smaller communal dumpsites.
No data available on leakages to the environment from the dumpsites.
